  • Norges Bank Investment Management is seeking a team-player who shares our passion for the finer details regarding equity special situations and voluntary corporate actions (collectively abbreviated “COACs” below). This is a front-office position in the Asset Strategies area, more specifically the Equity Enhanced Indexing (EEI) department.
EEI is a friendly and collaborative team responsible for the management of the fund’s global, diversified equity portfolios. A wide range of strategies are employed to improve portfolio risk/reward characteristics, with COAC research and decision-making an integral part. Reflecting the varied background of team members, value creation ranges across the spectrum from quantitative to qualitative approaches, though focusing on relative value and systematic peer comparisons rather than bottom-up fundamental valuation. Research by global strategy specialists and implementation by local generalist portfolio managers are well integrated, with some team members contributing in both capacities. COAC expertise is already strong globally, with a focus on sharing and delegation. There will be ample opportunity to learn, exchange ideas, and make a difference from the start.

    What you will do
You will create excess return throughout the COAC lifecycle, primarily in the Americas region. This includes research, ranging from accurate triangulation of basic event data between sources, via top-down searches through comprehensive documentation, to making predictions of aggregate market behaviour verging on game theory. It also includes portfolio implementation, by contributing to portfolio pre-positioning, and by making large investment decisions in the shape of COAC elections.
You will cover a wide range of event types, from simple optional dividends where the focus is on process robustness and efficiency, via rights issues which may have option-like characteristics, to complicated tender- and exchange offers requiring in-depth research. Key considerations for the latter may include elements such as adverse selection risk management, pro-rationing probabilities, index treatment, and in some cases even legal litigation rights.
You will be working closely with portfolio managers, traders, and analysts across our global offices, as well as collaborating with developers within the Technology area. Given a huge potential in process automation, technological awareness is valued, though not a core requirement; a good hand drawn specification can go a long way. You will also interact with our middle-office, which is responsible for event capture, instruction, and processing. There will be a healthy focus on results and feedback, focusing on concrete contributions to the collective mission statement.
You will report to the Head of EEI Americas, and work from our New York office; some travel will be required.

    Main responsibilities are the following:
    · Research COACs with other specialist(s).
    · Contribute to portfolio pre-positioning, balancing return, risk, and cost.
    · Independently elect on COACs, optimizing financial value for the fund.
    · Independently verify COAC elections made by others.
    · Create excess return through event-based and special situation strategies.
    · Refine investment strategies through in-depth analysis and local market adaptation.
    · Contribute to the department-wide research agenda.

    What you need
    • Strong academic results.
    • Material relevant experience with equity COAC research.
    • Familiarity with transaction-specific risk/return analysis in general, preferably also more specialized themes such as adverse selection, competitive bidding, pro-rationing, index rules, anti-trust approvals, tax, spins, and splits.
    • Data gathering ability, e.g. analyzing prospectus wording and shareholder segmentation.

    Who you are
    • You have hands-on COAC experience, e.g. as a buyside portfolio manager or asset servicing analyst, sell-side event-driven analyst, or similar.
    • You have solid research, analysis and decision-making skills related to COACs.
    • You have analytical creativity and intellectual curiosity with a strong attention to detail.
    • You have an ambition to excel, both individually and in teams, with a high level of integrity.
    • You have excellent collaboration and communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English.
    • You have an appreciation for giving and receiving straight-forward, constructive feedback.
    • You should have some interest in technology and automation, and while not required, any skills related to SQL Server/Snowflake, general data analytics and Python programming would be additional assets.

You will report to the Head of EEI Americas, and work from our London office; some travel will be required.
