Norges Bank manages the Government Petroleum Insurance Fund on behalf of the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. The operational management is conducted by Norges Bank Investment Management.

The management takes place within a framework stipulated in the Government Petroleum Insurance Fund Act of 30 May 1986, Regulation of 13 December 1996 and further guidelines set by the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, and the Management Agreement between the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and Norges Bank.
