Current trainees

Trainees with NBIM’s Investment Talent Programme may have different backgrounds and experiences, but share a passion for finance. Here is what some of them have to say about the programme.

Eirik, trainee – MSc Engineering and «Entreprenørskolen», NTNU

Who should apply to take part in the ITP?

People might think you need a degree in finance or economics to apply, but the programme is also open to candidates from other academic backgrounds with strong quantitative and analytical skills. If you are curious and passionate about finance, this is a great place to be.

Why did you apply?

I was intrigued by the opportunity to work within different areas of the investment business, both through job rotations at NBIM and a placement at an international investment bank. This broad exposure is especially valuable when you join the organisation straight from university, as I did. I also get to combine my interest in technology and business, for instance when analysing companies that the fund may invest in.

Birgitte, trainee – MA Financial Economy, NTNU and University of California UCSD

How would you sum up your first year with the programme?

I’ve learned that the organisation is a lot more complex than you’d think. It’s easy to forget all the support functions and systems behind the investment decisions. Working in three different departments has given me valuable insight into the investment «value chain» – and contacts all over the organisation.

What is your advice to anyone interested in the ITP?

If you have strong academic results and a keen interest in finance, go ahead and apply! Make sure your application reflects «who you are» in terms of drive, commitment and determination.

Fredrik, trainee – BA Economics, Columbia University

How would you describe the work environment at NBIM?

Our organisation is composed of highly skilled specialists and professionals. They are always approachable and willing to share their knowledge by helping, guiding and discussing. This team spirit also characterises the relationship between trainees – we can count on each other for exchanges of opinion, as well as advice on both professional and personal development matters.

Based on your ITP experience so far, what are your thoughts on your further career at NBIM?

I would really like to work in portfolio management. This year I’ll be able to gain relevant experience within equity research at an investment bank in London, where I’ll be focusing on the consumer sector.

Tor Herman, trainee – BSc Economics and Business Administration, NHH

Why did you apply for the ITP?

I have had a strong interest in financial investments for many years. In my view, the NBIM programme provides a unique opportunity to learn about the investment management industry within one of the world’s leading funds. The ITP is a comprehensive and structured programme, and if you are motivated and willing to learn, it is a fantastic opportunity.

What are you doing now?

I am currently working as an equity analyst with the oil and gas team in London as part of the ITP Year 3. Although I had one year’s experience from equity research and company valuation before joining NBIM, there is a lot to learn and the sector is new to me. I find it exceptionally interesting, and the learning curve is steep.
