Foreign exchange reserves

NBIM manages part of Norway's foreign exchange reserves on behalf of the central bank. The reserves shall be used to intervene in the foreign exchange market when implementing monetary policy or promoting financial stability.

The foreign exchange reserves are divided into a money market portfolio and an investment portfolio. There is also a buffer portfolio for foreign exchange purchased to build up the Government Pension Fund Global. The investment portfolio is the largest part of the foreign exchange reserves and is managed along with the petroleum buffer portfolio by NBIM.

The Market Operations and Analysis Department of the Norges Bank Monetary Policy division is responsible for managing the money market portfolio.
